NAHB Trip to Universal Forest Products in Belchertown, Ma
Wednesday December 7 members NAHB took a trip to Universal Forest Products in Belchertown, Ma for a tour of their production facility. Universal Forest Products produces pressure treated lumber, wood trusses as well as boxes and pallets for shipping. We started off in the office looking a the design aspect and the different types of software they use to draft and engineer wood products. We then moved out into the yard, and got to see how the plans get sent down and inputted into some of their high tech sawing equipment. Theses saws are designed to get the proper cuts in the most efficient way so that Universal Wood Products minimizes their waste. We were then able to see how the pieces are then assembled into trusses, and prepared for shipment. After that we moved through the plant and got a look at the equipment used in the pressure treating process. The tour was a great experience and a great opportunity to meet professionals in our field. NAHB looks forward to revisiting the site some time in the near future.
